Starting from grammar as a base, this text guides students toward clear and effective writing. Two kinds of answer are provided for the writing exercises in each unit.

The text presents students with the task of freely rendering Japanese into English by accurately grasping the meaning of a Japanese sentence but not being limited to a literal translation. In the first two pages of each unit, example sentences and hints provide clear and careful explanations of words, phrases, clauses, the meaning and function of sentence structure, sentence patterns and linking. Practice exercises are then used to help students grasp grammar and usage. Once this has been done, they can finally approach the task of composing a passage in English. The teacher’s manual contains test questions.
